Tom McGarry RIP

It is with deep regret that GAA Handball advise you that the death has occurred of Tom McGarry, Limerick (St Munchin's club).

Tom, Beloved husband of the late Josephine, will be sadly missed by his loving children Catherine, Susan, Siobhán, Jean, Louise, Thomas, Karen and Patrick, extended family, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

A talented all round sportsman, Tom McGarry, was one of the best handball players ever to come out of Limerick. He played with the famous St. Munchins Handball Club in Limerick City.

He was honoured by the Munster Handball Council and GAA Handball when he was adopted in to their handball hall of fame in 2003.

Only a small number of people achieve a high level of proficiency in any one particular sport, but McGarry was a top-class performer in sports such as handball, hurling, football, rugby and soccer.

By his own admission, McGarry’s first love was handball. “I played it seven days a week,” he recalled. “I played it from my very young days – began off by playing against the gable end of the house. It made you agile for all games – great training.” During the 1950’s, he was a regular in the winners’ enclosure both in singles and doubles (along with Martin Mullins).

It was around this time that Gael-Linn sponsored an All-Ireland Championship and McCarry was victorious on two occasions, defeating the noted Clare and Dublin hurler Dr. Des Dillon in the 1956 Final. McGarry’s younger brother, Pat, was also a noted star of the court (Handball Hall of Fame 2016) collected many national titles and winning the nomination of Player of the Year in 1980.

Tom's funeral will arrive to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Janesboro on Monday December 6 for Requiem Mass at 11am.
