The life of Alec Fitzpatrick remembered

GAA Handball are saddened by the death of 87 year old Belfast man Alec Fitzpatrick who passed away on Easter Saturday.

Alec is the grandfather of Gort na Mona player Lee Fitzpatrick, and was the long time coach of current Antrim GAA Handball Senior star Owen McKenna, from his juvenile days at Pearses HC through to later years at Davitts HC.

Alec was "an unbelievable character" widely regarded in Belfast Handball circles who's "charm and wit could lift a nation". He only took up Handball at the age of 60, and won Antrim & Provincial titles in his age category, and once lost out to the great Joey Maher in an All-Ireland Final.

His grandson Lee (quoted in the Irish News) told how his grandfather  "was never in bad form.” “He was the life and soul of any situation and a very, very loving person."
