Diarmuid Mulkerrins has captained his Team Galway to victory in the final of the 4th Paddy Grogan Memorial at Carrickmore HC, Tyrone, climaxing a fantastic weekend of brilliant Handball from the best juveniles in the country.
The tournament sees 24 players compete in six teams of four, (players from U14, U16, U18, & Girls U16), with matches played on a timed basis, and scoring on an aggregate basis.
Moycullen man Mulkerrins had earlier produced an almost miraculous recovery in the dying moments of his teams final SF match against Daniel Kavanagh to ensure his team progressed to the final against Cork, captained by David Walsh.
In the opening U14 game of the final, Josh Kavanagh edged a gutsy Cahir Munroe 23-18 to give his side an early 5pt lead.
In the Girls U16 match up, it was an all Leixip affair between Leah Doyle & Mollie Dagg. Both girls had gone three wins from three matches en route to the final, but it was Doyle who stole a march for her team with a dominant 24-9 win, having put on a very impressive serving display.
In the Boys U16 game, home club player Lorcan McBride overturned a ten point deficit for his team to eventually leave them leading by the single ace after a 22-13 win over Eoin Brennan.
So the pressure was then all left to the captains Mulkerrins & Walsh in the final match of the weekend, but Mulkerrins really upped his play to record a 24-5 win and seal the title for Team Galway.
