Record €1.3m funding announced for handball clubs

Handball clubs around Ireland have benefitted to the tune of €1,338,256 following the announcement of the Community Sport Facilities Funding Allocations.

This figure represents a record level of funding never reached before by handball clubs and is further evidence of the surge in participation and popularity in the sport.

“In what is the centenary year for GAA Handball, in which the association has already hosted the oneills.com World Wallball Championships and, next month, will stage the oneills.com World 4-Wall Championships, the announcement of this major tranche of grant funding is marvellous news and most welcome,” stated Head of Handball David Britton, who thanked Minister for Sport Thomas Byrne for his assistance.

“The Minister attended a number of handball events during the year and has pledged his commitment to help grow our sport and we are most appreciative of the support,” said Britton.

“Investment at grassroots is key and this funding will assist our volunteers grow the game and maintain and increase standards of facilities.”

In all, 16 different grants were awarded to handball projects. Among the successful applicants were Kells HC in Co Meath (€200,000), Shannon HC in Co Clare (€53,986), Ballymacelligott Handball Club in Co Kerry (€30,686), Cumann Liathróid Láimhe Inis Oírr (€55,000) and Lahorna HC, Co Tipperary (€128,117).

There were also a number of awards to GAA clubs nationwide for projects which included handball walls.
