Munster claimed the 2019 Girls Softball Interprovincial Team of Six in Broadford today. In the final Munster overcame Leinster after a very tight contest that went down to the very last match before they won on the score-line 84-61.
Pride, passion, skill and intense competition were all in abundance in Broadford as the girls from Munster and Leinster proudly represented their Provinces at the Girls Softball Interprovincial Team of 6 event.
This event hugely entertaining and competitive saw three doubles pairings, aged between 13 & 17 compete on aggregate scoring, with some of the young girls competing at national level for the first time.
First to play in U13 were Cork’s Carmel Kelleher and Tipperary’s Christine Percy against Kilkenny's Katie Brennan and Holly Byrne. In two tightly fought games the Munster girls won 15-6, 15-14.
Next up were the U15 doubles of Cork’s Sarah Walsh and Cliona Dunning against Kilkenny’s Lauren Power and Doireann Knox. In a high tempo game Munster took the first game 15-13 and Leinster won the second 15-9.
The U17's were last to play. With 6 points between the teams the title was up for grabs by both teams, but Clare’s Chloe Philpott and Leah Minogue started well and won the first game 15-8 against the Kilkenny duo of Noelle Dowling and Hannah Clifford. They went on to take the second and the match 15-5 for the Munster team to win the title on a final score-line Munster 84, Leinster 61.
Congratulations to all the players, coaches and a special word of thanks to the Broadford club for their hospitality and referring on the day.
And so, the Softball season draws to a close with the final titles decided and the Softball Roll of Honour for 2019 complete.
