The Ball Alley : Opened 1937
Over the last fortnight Tom Byrne and his sons PJ and Martin have transformed the old ball alley on Thomas Street. Overgrown with Ivy the guys stripped the Ivy off the inner and outer walls, power washed and repaired parts of the playing surface and reattached the roof netting. This is a very personal project for Tom and his family. Generations of Coilltes played handball and a variety of sports here. Half solids and elephant balls bouncing over the wall regularly breaking Kathleen Cummins and Jimmy Byrne's shop windows. World, All Ireland, Connacht and Mayo champions practiced and played here. Great memories and friendships were forged in this alley. Congratulations on a job well done.
