Handball programme delivered in Cork Prison

GAA Handball recently teamed up with the Cork Sports Partnership in their Award-Winning Sports Programme in Cork Prison.

The programme, in conjunction with Cork Prison Services, has been running since 2016. Sporting organisations working with the prison this year include: Basketball Ireland Munster Rugby, the FAI, The Cara Centre, Cork GAA, GAA Handball and many more.

Each year, 14 participants are handpicked from the prison to participate in the sports programme. The basis on which inmates are selected is based on good behaviour and is designed to encourage this within the prison.

Mallow HC's David Walsh and Gearoid O Connell represented GAA Handball and conducted the coaching session. Cork Sports Partnership Development Officer, James Kirby, received feedback from wardens and the group themselves, that they had great fun and “it was one of the most enjoyable workshops of the programme thus far. They are handball mad.”
