60x30 Colleges Roundup

Mayo’s Patrick Murphy, St. Colman’s, Claremorris captured the 2nd level colleges Boys Senior Singles title while Kildare’s Leah Doyle, Confey College, Leixlip capped a terrific year on the court when she took home the Girls Senior Singles title in Ballina today.

Tipperary clubs Ballina and Lahoran plus Hospital from Limerick hosted the semi-finals and finals of this year’s 60x30 All Ireland Colleges as the final event of the 60x30 calendar brought the softball season to a close. Titles went to the four corners of the country as the cream of the crop came to the top. TEN different schools took home one titles a piece. It was a very good day for Kilkenny handball as they took home four titles follow by Kildare and Mayo with two each, while Clare and Wexford both claimed one apiece.

In the Girls Junior Singles Final Kildare’s Mollie Dagg of Colaiste Chiarain, Leixlip won this title for the second year in a row when she defeated Caitlin Conway Dean Maguirc, Carrickmore. The Girls Junior Doubles title went to St Joseph’s Tulla when Chloe Philpott/Orla O’Brien defeated Skylan Ni Mhaille/Eadaoin Nic Dhonnacha of Colaiste Croi Muire An Spideal. In the Girls Blue Riband event the Senior Singles, Leah Doyle of Confey College, Leixlip overcame Aoife Floyd of St. Joseph’s Tulla on a score-line of 15-4, 15-2. While the Girls Senior Doubles title went to Mayo’s Cuilleann Bourke/Claire Reynold representing Balla Secondary School as they overcame Anna Dunne/Aoife Hurley of Loretto Convent, Fermoy.

In the Boys competitions, the Junior Singles final was won by Kilkenny’s Billy Drennan of Kilkenny CBS as he won this title for the second year in a row when he accounted for Rory Grace of Nenagh College. The Junior Doubles title went to Mark Doyle/Conor Dobbs Wexford CBS when they overcame Ronan Boyle/Szymon Polewski of St. Macartan’s College Monaghan over two tight game. The Boys Intermediate Singles final was won by Jack Holden of Greenan College also for the second year in a row when he defeated Brian McAleer of Omagh CBS. While the Boys Intermediate Doubles final turned out to be the game of the day with Kyle Dunne/Billy O’Neill representing Castlecomer CS overcame last year’s winners of this grade Antoin Fox/Lorcan McBride of Omagh CBS after a tough two game tussle in Lahorna.

The Boys Senior Doubles title went to the strong Kilkenny pairing of Eoin Brennan of St. Kieran’s, Kilkenny when they defeated Rian McCaul/Tiernan McAleer of Omagh CBS. Finally the Boys Blue Riband event namely the Boys Senior Singles final went to Mayo’s Patrick Murphy representing St. Colmans Claremorris where he overcame Daire Keane, Tralee CBS on a score-line of 15-3, 15-5. 

And so the 60x30 season draws to a close with the final titles decided and the 60x30 Roll of Honour for 2017 complete. GAA Handball would like to thank all the venue official’s, referees, players, teachers, parents and coaches for making these finals such a success.
