2017 60x30 Juvenile Championship Finals Roundup

The cream of Ireland’s 60x30 Juveniles players converged on Leinster venues over the weekend to battle it out for the 2017 Myclubshop.ie All Ireland finals in the softball code. Twelve counties in all competed with Wexford topping the medals table with SIX titles. Kilkenny took home 3, Kildare 2 while Cavan, Clare, Roscommon and Tyrone all taking one title back to their respective counties to complete a very successful weekend of Handball.

Castlebridge hosted six games with Wexford winning five of these to the delight of the large local crowd. The first Wexford title was won in the Boys U15 Doubles with Diarmuid Moore and Dean O’Neill having a three game thriller with Brian McAleer and Jack Darcy Tyrone. The Wexford players finished the stronger to take the title 8-15, 15-5, 15-6. In the Boys U14 Doubles the Wexford pair of Mark Doyle and Ben Keeling had a comfortable win over Cork’s Kealan Murphy and Gearoid Healy. Next up was the Boys U17 Doubles with Robert Cogley and Ciaran Power defeating Niall Delaney and Brooklyn Hickey Cork 21-6 and 21-8.

Then, the Wexford girls took centre stage with Cora Doyle in the Girls U17 Singles as she overcame Aisling Shanahan Limerick 21-2, 21-8. This was followed by the Girls U17 Doubles final between Clodagh White and Lucia Merrigan against Keri Murphy and Ciara McCarthy also of Limerick. This proved a very tight match that at one stage looked like going to a third before Wexford took control and finished the match off 21-2, 21-8. The sixth Wexford win was in the Boys U16 Doubles grade which was played the previous weekend were Josh Kavanagh and Cian Kehoe had a very tight tie-break win over Cork’s Cian O’Drioscoll and Anthony O’Connell on a score-line 21-15, 13-21, 11-8.

Kilkenny’s three titles came in three out of the four premium singles grades that were played in Garryhill. First up was the Boys U14 Singles were Billy Drennan defeated the gifted Tipperary handballer Rory Grace 15-6, 15-5. In the Girls U14 Singles Amy Brennan also had a very impressive win against Cloda Nic Con Midhe of Tyrone 15-6, 15-8. Kilkenny’s third win came in the Boys U16 Singles when Jack Holden had an easy win 21-3, 21-4 against Cork’s Darragh Ducey.

The Girls U16 Singles Final was played on Saturday afternoon in St. Mary’s Wexford with last year’s U16 Doubles winner Mollie Dagg of Kildare up against last year’s U14 Singles winner Mairead Fox Tyrone. This was a very tight match with little between both players with plenty of long rallies and great skill showed by both players but in the end the Kildare player came out on top 21-11, 21-11. Kildare’s second win was in the Girls U15 Singles when Abby Tarrant overcame Louise McGinnity of Monaghan 15-1, 15-2.

In the Girls U16 Doubles final, the experienced Tyrone pairing of Caitlin Conway and Elizabeth McGarvey were up against the much fancied Kilkenny pairing of Noelle Dowling and Roisin O’Keeffe. The Kilkenny girls put up a good fight and pushed Tyrone all the way but the Ulster girls came out on top 21-13, 21-11. In the Girls U14 Doubles the Clare pair of Chloe Philpott and Ellen Casey had a comfortable win over Mayo’s Lucy Brennan and Amy Shannon.

One of the games of the day was in the Boys U15 Singles in Garryhill with Tipperary’s Cormac Doheny taking the first before Roscommon’s Liam Egan re-grouped and took the next two to win the title on a score-line of 5-15, 15-8, 15-12. Finally in the Boys U17 Singles final, Cavan’s Conor Owens proved too strong for Wexford’s Colm Parnell and won the title on a score-line of 21-7 and 21-10.

Congratulations to all the players, parents, coaches, referees and sincere thanks to the host clubs of Cullen, St. Mary’s, Garryhill and Castlebridge for their hospitable and to all that travelled for the 60x30 Juvenile Softball Finals for 2017.
