The Worlds Explained

The World Handball Championships are held every three years, and this August 9th - 19th they are being hosted in Minnesota.

Some key information for any of the non Handballing public out there.

  • The Worlds are governed by the World Handball Council (WHC)
  • Both the 4-Wall & 1-Wall codes of Handball are played during the Worlds
  • Singles & Doubles events are played in each code
  • The Men's & Ladies Open events are the premier grades at the Worlds

GAA Handball are sending a 13 strong Team Ireland, all of whom qualified through a series of Championships in Ireland in the first half of 2018. 

Team Ireland:

  • Martin Mulkerrins (Galway) - 4-Wall Senior Singles - Team Captain
  • Martina McMahon (Limerick) 4-Wall Senior Singles/Doubles & 1-Wall Senior Singles - Team Captain
  • Paul Brady (Cavan) - Current 4-Wall World Champion
  • Aisling Reilly (Antrim) - 4-Wall Senior Doubles & Current 4-Wall World Champion
  • Robbie McCarthy (Westmeath) - 4-Wall Senior Doubles
  • Diarmuid Nash (Clare) - 4-Wall Senior Doubles
  • Conor McElduff (Tyrone) - 1-Wall Senior
  • Shane Dunne (Kilkenny) - 19&U
  • Megan McCann (Armagh) - 19&U
  • Eoghan McGinnity (Monaghan) - 17&U
  • Niamh Heffernan (Galway) - 17&U
  • Josh Kavanagh (Wexford) - 15&U
  • Mairead Fox (Tyrone) - 15&U
  • Management - Michael Finnegan (Cavan) & Frances Curran (Galway)

In total, 10 countries are represented in this years World Championships, which are held every three years. Ireland are due next to be hosting the 2021 Worlds.
