On July 15-17th in John the Baptist Community School Hospital Handball Club will be holding one of Ireland’s most eagerly anticipated one wall tournaments, “The King of the Gym”. This event has been deemed one of the stand out tournaments on the clár aside from the GAA Handball One Wall Nationals due to it’s incredible atmosphere, large number players and top quality games.
Last year’s event attracted just over 130 players from all over the country. The men’s grade included Mayo’s power house Vinny Moran, Kerry’s speed demon Dominic Lynch, the energetic Fergal Coughlan with one of Kilkenny’s future greats Kyle Jordan shining in the juvenile grades. The female grades also attracted four of the worlds best one wall players in the current One Wall National champion Catriona Casey, Galway star Ciana Ní Churraoin, the hard working Ciara Mahon, previous UK Wall Ball champion Sinead Hanley and Sadhbh Ní Fhlaithbheartaigh energising the juvenile grades.
In preparation for this year’s event the club has installed a brand new state of the art wooden one wall court along with two other concrete courts on the location with another court available in the 60x30 court. The tournament will be played on a round robin bases with each player receiving a minimum of three games. Players will compete for first and second place in each group with both players qualifying for the quarter final stages. Each player will receive an official tournament t-shirt when they check in and there will be a shop on location.
