Don't forget to cast your vote for Club of the Year, can't decide what club to vote for? Have a look at the rationale below.
Breacach (Tyrone)
Steeped in history, previous Club of the Year winners, Breachach, have produced some of Ireland’s brightest Handball players which is demonstrated in the accolades achieved in the past year alone across all ages, grades and codes of GAA Handball.
What inspired many of their nomination rationales was the announcement that they are to begin works on their second 40x20 court in Mid-January. With funding for the project already secured, the club members are currently involved in a fundraising with the local GAA Club, Beragh Red Knights, to raise £300K for the construction of a 3-court sports hall which will greatly enhance their excellent facilities. Breachach are an active and progressive club whose determination can be best illustrated by the fact that 8 weeks after their court was flooded to a depth of 3 feet they were back in action with a new floor and walls freshly plastered.
Castlebridge (Wexford)
Castlebridge have put forth a tremendous amount of work in the past year. They have not received any funding as part of their development plans, and support is from local fund raising and in a loan to be repaid.
Not only have Castlebridge put a huge amount of emphasise and excellence into their Juvenile section, they have been represented across a range of grades and codes in GAA Handball Championships and Competitions.
Lahorna (Tipperary)
The game of handball has been played in Lahorna since before 1850. The front wall was blown down on the night of the Big Wind circa 1893 and rebuilt, with the side walls extended over the years and a back wall added. The ball alley was roofed in 1975 and re-roofed in 2015. With such a long-standing history, Lahorna have won a plateau of accolades in the successes of 2017 and continue to grow.
Lahorna has hosted many 60 x 30 softball games over the last few years including the All - Ireland Hardball Singles Finals in 2017, the juvenile All - Ireland Munster v Ulster semi-finals and the All - Ireland Colleges semi-finals and finals.
Lahorna have been allocated €50,500 in the 2017 Sports Capital Programme towards the construction of a new 40 x 20 court. With a 60 x 30 court and a 40 x 20 court it will be onwards and upwards for the Club.
Moycullen (Galway)
In recent years, Moycullen handball club has continued to develop its facilities and now boasts two top class 40x20 courts and a state of the art 60x30 court. Total costs exceeded €345,000 of which only €102K was grant funded. The completion of the viewing galleries in Spring 2017 concludes 7 years of hard work and dedication of a very committed committee.
The facility is among the finest in the country and has hosted the Juvenile Nationals Finals for the last 2 years. The club has more than 120 members and continues to promote and develop the game of handball not only locally but internationally.
Moycullen boasts a long tradition of handball going back to the 1920s. The new facilities have sparked a strong resurgence and the club has claimed nearly all available juvenile titles in the last 10 years along with a list of collegiate and world titles. Winning ways are not confined to the youth grades as many Masters grades and over 70s have also been victorious both at home and abroad.
