The latest GAA club to embrace the One Wall handball revolution is Drumgoon Eire Og in Cavan, home club of GAA President Aogan O Fearghaíl.
There is a long history of handball in the parish, with an old outdoor court at Maudabawn and an off-sized One Wall at Dernakesh NS, where O Fearghail is principal.
However, the installation of a full-sized One Wall court in the club's new hall at Boyle Park is a further boost for the sport in the region. Drumgoon is situated adjacent to Cootehill and within a few miles of Bawn and Kingscourt.
"Everything that’s developed at any GAA club, not just my own, is always to improve the whole community feel of a club, not just as a GAA club because we need everybody involved to cater for all our games and to make sure that our on-field performances are supported by the best facilities," stated Aogán.
"So we have a substantial hall, for a small club in a small area it’s a great-sized hall. We have put a handball wall into it, which I’m delighted about. We had an outdoor handball alley that was thriving in Drumgoon for I’d say four decades but sadly fell into disrepair and handball disappeared.
But we brought it back into the school with a little development but this is much better, it’a a full-size One Wall handball court."
To mark the occasion, Michael Clerkin and Gavin Coyle took part in an exhibition game.
