It is with deep sadness and regret that GAA Handball inform you of the passing of one of the all time greats of the game, Joey Maher (Louth) who passed away suddenly on Monday. Joey was a multiple All Ireland Senior, Canadian and World Champion and was an extremely popular and well liked person on the Handball circuit.
Joey was the first Irishman to win the world handball crown when he took the title in Toronto in 1967, representing Canada having moved to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to concentrate on improving his handball skills
Joey always had time to offer words of advice for any young players and took great interest in their progress. He was present at the All Ireland 60x30 Finals in Roscommon just last year offering advice to the up and coming players. He will be sorely missed and the GAA Handball community will be a poorer place without him.
Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
On behalf of GAA Handball we offer our sincere condolences to Joey's wife Doris and to his family and friends at this sad time.
