Teagasc, in partnership with Galway County Council will host a major national event tomorrow Friday, 10th June and on Saturday, 11th June commemorating Farming and Country Life 1916 at Teagasc, Mellows Campus in Athenry. An estimated 50,000 people will attend the event over the two days.

As can be seen above, HANDBALL will feature in the sports and culture aspect of the event. A ONE-WALL COURT has been erected especially for this purpose. Tomorrow, Friday, 10th June, 50 players from 9 different primary schools around Galway will participate in a commemorative tournament. Uachtarán CLLÉ, Willie Roche, will be in attendance at what should be a memorable tournament for all participants. Following the primary school tournament, Teagasc advisors, Vivian Silke (Galway) and Conor Holohan (Monaghan) will do battle before Diarmuid Mulkerrins hopes to take down older brother Martin.
An exhibition game between hurling and handball sensation, DJ Carey (Kilkenny), and Galway’s Martin Mulkerrins will take place on Saturday at 11am. There will also be ladies exhibition games played by Galway’s up and coming star Niamh Heffernan, Clodagh Nash (Clare) and Eimear Beatty (Galway). World champions Jason O’Toole (Galway) and Diarmuid Mulkerrins (Galway) will take on Conor Downes (Clare) and Shane Dunne (Kilkenny) respectively, two matches that will surely showcase all the skills and class that these stars of the future have.
Finally, to recreate what handball would have been like in 1916, a Masters doubles exhibition in the old style clothing of shoes, slacks, white shirts (with the sleeves rolled up of course!) and a caipín should steal the show.
