Walsh takes Southern Classic title after thrilling final
by Paul Fitzpatrick

Mallow's David Walsh got the new 4-Wall season off to a winning start when he captured the Southern Classic title on home soil in Cork, overcoming Robbie McCarthy in a thrilling final to take the honours.

Walsh defeated the Westmeath man by 15-9, 14-15, 11-8 in the decider at Liscarroll, having come through his previous three matches in straight games. It was an impressive weekend's work for the 26-year-old Dublin-based schoolteacher, who was a convincing winner in the earlier rounds before holding his nerve in a tense tiebreaker in the final.

The Southern Classic, hosted in Mallow and Liscarroll, was the first ranking event of the 2026/27 campaign and attracted an interesting mixture of established senior players, experienced campaigners and emerging talent.
With changes to the Clár, the All-Ireland Championships will begin earlier in 2027, which is likely to add further importance to the circuit of pre-season ranking tournaments, of which this was the first.

Walsh, playing in familiar surroundings, began his campaign with a comprehensive 15-3, 15-1 victory over Monaghan's Oran Kiernan in the last 16. Kiernan’s weekend wasn’t over there; the Carrickmacross man completed the Dublin Marathon two days later.
Walsh followed that with an equally impressive performance in the quarter-finals, winning 15-6, 15-4 against Kilkenny's Kyle Jordan, before facing fellow Cork man Daniel Relihan in an all-north Cork semi-final.

Relihan had impressed on his way to the last four but Walsh maintained his excellent form, taking the opening game 15-12 before closing out the contest 15-8 to book his place in the final.
McCarthy, meanwhile, was equally impressive on the opposite side of the draw.

The multiple All-Ireland champion, who currently holds the 4-Wall and softball singles crowns, opened with a convincing 15-5, 15-2 victory over Kilkenny's Jack Doyle before accounting for Cork's Brendan Fleming by 15-4, 15-2 in the quarter-finals.

The wily Fleming, the reigning world Over 40s champion, had earlier defeated Sligo's Cormac Finn, who reached the All-Ireland Senior Softball Singles final earlier this year, by 15-6, 15-8.
McCarthy was on form in the semi-finals, defeating Monaghan's Gavin Coyle 15-4, 15-4 to advance to the decider without having dropped a game.

The final, however, proved a much closer affair.
Walsh took the opening game 15-9 but McCarthy responded strongly to edge a gripping second game 15-14 with a flat back wall kill and force a tiebreaker.

With the title on the line, the powerful Walsh stepped up in the deciding game, eventually prevailing 11-8 to secure the first ranking title of the season and the Michael Jordan Cup.

It was another significant victory for Walsh, who has established himself among the leading players in the country in recent seasons, and a particularly satisfying one in front of his home supporters.

Earlier, the quarter-finals produced some absorbing contests, including a meeting between doubles partners Relihan and Michael Hedigan. Relihan came out on top by 15-3, 15-14.

Coyle also impressed in the last eight, defeating Shane Hedigan 15-6, 15-12, having earlier overcome Cian O'Driscoll 15-14, 15-1.

Jordan, who won the Southern Classic last year and captured the All-Ireland Senior Softball

Doubles title earlier this season, had been among the leading contenders heading into the weekend. The young Kilkenny man defeated veteran Kerry left-hander Dominick Lynch 15-4, 15-5 in the last 16 but was unable to make an impression against Walsh in the quarter-finals.

The last 16 also saw Shane Hedigan defeat former two-time All-Ireland minor champion Eoghan McGinnity of Monaghan by 15-8, 15-14, while Michael Hedigan recovered from the loss of the opening game to overcome Kildare left-hander

Niall O'Connor of Leixlip by 14-15, 15-9, 11-6.
Relihan was a comfortable 15-4, 15-3 winner over promising young Cork player Cian Dunning, from Conna, who was recently crowned 19&U world wallball champion in New York.

The tournament had begun on Friday evening with eight round-of-32 encounters, several of which produced noteworthy results.

Kilkenny's Jack Doyle defeated Clare's Colin Crehan, a three-time All-Ireland Four-Wall Senior Doubles champion, by 15-12, 15-5.

Cian O'Driscoll was a comfortable 15-2, 15-1 winner over Galway's Seamus Conneely, while Shane Hedigan defeated Kilkenny's Shane Dunne 15-8, 15-1.

Dunning advanced following an eventful meeting with Gearóid Healy of Liscarroll, recovering from the loss of the opening game to take the second before leading 5-0 in the tiebreaker when Healy was forced to retire through injury.

Kiernan also came through a close encounter, edging Limerick's Evan Murphy 11-9 in the deciding game, while Jordan began his title defence with a 15-4, 15-5 victory over Cavan's Ben Devlin.

O'Connor needed a tiebreaker to overcome young Kilkenny player John Hayes, winning the decider 11-5, while Fleming defeated Mayo's Paddy Murphy 15-4, 15-3.

Murphy went on to enjoy success in the plate competition, taking that title to round off the weekend.

For Walsh, however, the main honours represented an ideal start to the new campaign. Next up is the iconic Golden Gloves tournament in Belfast later this month.
