Big guns advance in oneills.com Senior Singles championships

The oneills.com All-Ireland Men’s and Ladies Senior Championships are each down to the last eight following the culmination of a hectic weekend of action.

In the Men’s Senior Singles, there were no major upsets in the rounds of 32 and 16 last weekend.

Defending champion Robbie McCarthy was in brilliant form as he dispatched youngster Cormac Finn of Sligo, who had beaten Mayo’s Niall Joyce, in emphatic fashion, with number two seed Diarmaid Nash a comfortable victor over last year’s U21 champion Rory Grace from Tipperary.

Five-time world champion Paul Brady, making a sensational return to the competition for the first time since 2013, advanced with wins over Michael Gregan and Peter Funchion.

There were also wins for the 2023 Intermediate champion Gavin Coyle, recently-crowned doubles champion Daniel Relihan, former Intermediate winner Conor McElduff and Kilkenny’s Patrick Funchion, while talented Corkman David Walsh advanced via a walkover.

In the oneills.com Ladies Senior Singles, the big guns rolled through the round of 16 with the minimum of fuss.

The tie of the round was the meeting of Kildare’s Mollie Dagg and Armagh’s Megan McCann, with the Lilywhite lady winning in two close games.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals are down for decision this weekend at the National Handball Centre.
