Cork duo slam at Players Championship in Portland

Cork sensation Killian Carroll has claimed his maiden win on the US Pro-Tour with victory at the prestigious WPH Players Championship in Portland.

Killian required a tiebreak to see off Sean Lenning (Washington) in the final 15-6, 12-15, 15-11, after defeating Paul Brady for the first time in his career in last nights SF.

Killian has long been touted as a potential great, having had an illustrious juvenile career, winning three consecutive Irish ranking events last season, before making the World Final last August. We are confident this is the first of many major honours for the flying Cork man.

In the Ladies Open, Catriona Casey claimed her 4th major honour in the space of two months having won the final against great rival Aisling Reilly

Casey has also recently won the All-Ireland Singles & Doubles Championships, as well as the Irish Nationals title just last weekend.

In tonight's final she was never in doubt and ran out a comfortable 15-6, 15-4 winner against Reilly, which is somewhat surprising since their last four meetings went to tiebreakers. But the Ballydesmond woman took the lead early on and never relinquished her momentum to seal another eye catching victory.

Wexford's Gavin Buggy also had a fine few days stateside, capped by winning the Masters Singles (40+) at the WPH Players Championship in Portland.

On Friday Gavin actually qualified to the elite 16 of the Men's Open event at the first time of asking, before being knocked out by Mando Ortiz in the Round of 16.

But he put this to one side to defeat competitors from the US & Mexico to reach the Masters Final against top seed Marcus Chavez (California). There a tough battle proceeded before the St Joseph's clubman won 21-17, 21-17.

Gavin is a very popular competitor on the Irish Handball scene, a regular high profile referee, and has just recently finished his qualification to be a National Tutor for GAA Handball.
