2015 60x30 Colleges Roundup

Roscommon’s Fiona Tully, Convent of Mercy, Roscommon captured the Colleges Senior Girls Singles title for the second year in a row while Mayo’s Niall Joyce capped a brilliant year on the court when he took home the Senior Boys Singles title for St. Colmans, Claremorris in Cashel last Saturday.

Cashel, Clonmel and Dungarvan hosted the semi-finals and finals of this year’s 60x30 All Ireland Colleges as the final event of the 60x30 calendar brought the softball season to a close. Titles went to the four corners of the country as the cream of the crop came to the top. Nine different schools took home titles with Limerick schools coming out on top with three titles, closely follow by Kilkenny with two titles with Cork, Kildare, Mayo, Roscommon and Tyrone all claiming one title each.

In the Girls Junior Singles Final Limerick’s Catriona Millane of Laurel Hill Gael Colaiste finished a great year with another title when she defeated Michaela McCartan St. Ciarans, Ballygawley. The Girls Junior Doubles title went to Kildare’s Leah Doyle/Mollie Dagg, Colaiste Chiarain, Leixlip when they defeated Tyrone’s Emer Kerr/Caitlin Conway Dean Maguire, Carrickmore over three games. The Girls Senior Singles title went the way of Roscommon and Convent of Mercy Fiona Tully who defeated Kilkenny’s Aoife Holden representing Greenan College, Thomastown. While the Girl's Senior Doubles title saw Limerick’s Katie McCarthy/Cathy Foley of Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher overcame Kilkenny’s Catriona Lawlor/Aileen Hennessy Castlecomer CS.

In the Boys competitions the Junior Singles title went to Kilkenny’s Jack Holden, Greenan College as he accounted for Roscommon CC, Gareth Delaney. The Junior Doubles title went for a second year in a row to Antoin Fox/Lorcan McBride Omagh CBS when they defeated Kyle Dunne/Billy O’Neill Castlecomer CS in one of the games of the day with brilliant handball on show throughout the three games. In the Boys Intermediate Singles final was another 3 game epic with Kilkenny’s and Castlecomer CS star Shane Dunne just edging Diarmuid Mulkerrins of St. Mary’s Galway. In the Boys Intermediate Doubles Cork’s David and Conor Walsh of Patrician Academy Mallow had a tough two game victory over Cormac Munroe/Ciaran Cuddy Dean Maguire, Tyrone.

The Boys Senior Doubles title went to Evan Murphy/Nigel O’Callaghan of Hazelwood College for their schools second title on the day when they defeated Patrick Murphy/Mikey Kelly St. Colman’s Claremorris. The Blue Riband event was the Boys Senior Singles final where Niall Joyce of St. Colman’s Claremorris overcame Fergal Coughlan, Rice College, Ennis over two tight games on a scoreline of 15-9, 15-5 to ensure all four provinces shared the boys titles.

And so the 60x30 season drew to a close with the final titles decided and the Roll of Honour in 60x30 for 2015 complete. GAA Handball would like to thank all the venue official’s, referees, players, parents and coaches for making these finals such a success.
