10th Cavan 40x20 Championships

The 10th annual Cavan 40x20 Singles Championship serves off from December 4-6 next in Kingscourt. The grades on offer (all singles) are U12, U14, U16, Junior B, Junior A and Senior.

World champion Paul Brady seeks a three-in-a-row at senior level, with Ulster Colleges 60x30 Senior Singles winner Stephen Smith expected to take the no 1 seed in the Junior A Singles following his defeat in last year's final against Daryll Dolan. However, he will face stiff opposition from the likes of Shane Briody and last year's Junior B winner Dara Gunne, who was recently honoured with a Breffni All-Star award in football for his heroics with Kingscourt Stars in the SFC.

Dolan steps up to senior ranks where he will join the likes of 2014 All-Ireland Junior B finalist Cormac McMahon, former Cavan footballer Padraig Cahill and US Nationals B Doubles winner Eddie Halligan. However, 10-time All-Ireland Senior Doubles medallist Michael Finnegan, also one of the top senior players in the country, will provide the main opposition for Brady as he looks to reach his fifth successive decider.

James Brady, who recently reached the All-Ireland 60x30 Intermediate Singles final, will also be expected to go well should he recover from an arm injury to take his chance, as will the experienced Patrick Clerkin. The Junior B grade, as always, looks set to be most competitive with up to 20 players expected to take their place in the field.

Jim Gilsenan came close to taking Munterconnaught's first county title last year and Vincent Mulvey or Peter McCabe could achieve that feat this year, with youngsters Conor Owens and Caolán Smith also expected to feature strongly.

The underage grades will feature players from Kingscourt, St Pat's, Munterconnaught, Virginia and the newly-formed Ballyconnell club in what will be a feast of handball at the fantastic east Cavan venue.
