One of the finest club tournament in the country, as it is now being widely described, took place from Friday 22nd to Sunday the 24th June 2012 and was truly a fantastic weekend of handball hosted by Mount Talbot Handball Club.
(Submitted by Mount Talbot Handball Club PRO)
The proceedings concluded on Sunday evening at 6pm with over 200 people watching the Ladies and Mens Open Finals. The games had started all of 51 hours earlier at 3pm on Friday with 6 courts used throughout the weekend. Indeed a much larger crowd of up to 500 people packed the various venues at certain times throughout the weekend. The two fabulous outdoor courts in Mount Talbot were used with proceedings being transferred to the newly constructed indoor court in Tisrara Community Centre, Four Roads when the weather deteriorated.
The 3 Courts in the Mattie Mc Donagh Centre, Ballygar were also in constant use for well over 30 hours. The standard of play throughout the weekend was immense with the vast majority of the National Champions at all ages present. On Sunday evening close to 270 players from 27 counties in Ireland had played well over 400 games. A feature not too common in relation to handball events was the precise nature of the schedule where all of the 400+ matches were played at the time scheduled on the draws circulated the previous week. This allowed both players and the enormous number of spectators plan their weekend in advance in order to achieve optimum performance on the court and view any games they wished.
The results are outlined below but firstly a great debt of gratitude goes to the many people who officiated in any way at the games, also to the many people that catered for the masses throughout the weekend and finally to all of our sponsors who kindly sponsored the various grades.
Both Open sponsors deserve special mention as both provided perpetual cups for the Open winners. Joan Treacy of Classic Cutz Roscommon who presented the club with a beautiful new cup for the ladies open event and Sonny Kildea of Kildea Concrete who presented the club with a shield to present to the mens open champion.
Finally to all the people who traveled from every corner of the country to participate and to support the event. This is truly appreciated and we hope your generosity in traveling to the competition was rewarded throughout the weekend. As with last years event where 170 participants took place a new record for any Handball Club Tournament was created with 267 entries. The massive influx of people estimated to be well over 500 was a welcome boost to the business of the area in these tough times. It was also pleasing to see so many people both young and old of the wider community that would normally have no exposure to handball attending the games and thoroughly enjoying the experience. When proceedings concluded on Sunday evening both the Kildea Concrete Mens Open Sheild and the Joan Treacy Ladies Open Perpetual Cup had a new name to replace both Robbie Mc Carthy and Marianna Rushe who were victouries last year.
Like so many other finals both the Open finals were both of a very high quality. In the Ladies Open Lorraine Havern of the Saval club in Down defeated Swinford's Pauline Gallagher in two games 15-9, 15-10. Lorraine had earlier defeated Amy Corrigan in the semi final 25-14 while Pauline accounted for Lauren O Riordan 21-15. In the Mens Open Final the massive crowd present were treated a absorbing contest as James Doyle of Ard Mhaca took to the courts to take on reigning 60X30 Minor Champion and reigning world title holder Martin Mulkerrins. Doyle who has been a wonderfull ambassador of the One Wall Code which is fast becoming the most popular code of handball in country, showed why he has represented his country so many times.
However it was far from easy for Doyle as Mulkerins battled extremely well and showed real class to take the first 15-8. In the second Doyle steadied and showed all his experience to bring the game to a tiebreaker winning 15-6. The tie breaker ebbed and flowed and the massive crowed were treated to a magnificent display of retrivals with plenty of full length dives to return the ball. The players were level on two occasions before Doyle got in to serve. Some unretrievable serves followed which allowed Doyle establish a gap which proved to be too great to narrow for Mulkerins. Doyle ability to block the ball so well also contributed to him closing out the game 11-5.
Other notable finals were the Masters final in which Mount Talbots Aidan Heneghan and Borris native David King had a nail-biting final with David just shading it 19-15 also the Boys Minor final was a game of extremely high quality with Patrick Mc Crory defeating Pat Havern in the tie breaker. Both Novice finals were extremely enjoyable with Mount Talbots Kevin Kelleghan defeating fellow clubman Coman Coyle and the hosts clubs Kate Coyle defeated her cousin Maedbh Ni Chumhaill in the ladies novice plate.
The club hopes thats it original aim to provide ideal preparation for the One Wall Nationals next week was realised and wants to wish all players the very best in Citywest.
